TDS Return Filing 2026-27: Forms 138, 140, 144 & Correction Statements

TDS return filing guide TY 2026-27: Forms 138, 140 and 144, quarterly due dates, step-by-step portal filing and late fee rules.

Updated 12 September 2026: The Income Tax Department now states that TDS/TCS correction statements for Tax Year 2026-27 have been enabled. Quarterly TDS reporting under the Income-tax Act, 2025 uses the current forms including Forms 138, 140 and 144. Historical corrections for periods governed by the old Act continue under the applicable old-law form and transition rules.

Current portal status: TY 2026-27 correction filing is now enabled. If you need to correct PAN/deductee, challan allocation or another statement field, first identify the tax year, statement type, quarter and accepted original statement before preparing a correction.

Correction statements are now enabled for TY 2026-27

This is a material portal-status change. A deductor should use a correction statement only after checking the status and reference details of the original statement. Do not upload a second regular statement merely to repair an accepted filing.

Correction workflow

  1. Identify the original form, tax year and quarter.
  2. Confirm that the original statement has been filed/processed sufficiently for the prescribed correction workflow.
  3. Reconcile the accepted statement with the payroll/vendor ledger, challans and deductee records.
  4. Identify the exact error: PAN/deductee details, challan allocation, payment/deduction data or other permitted correction field.
  5. Use the current utility/process applicable to that statement and correction type.
  6. Match the TAN and required original-statement/reference details exactly.
  7. Validate the correction file before upload.
  8. Upload through the current portal workflow and complete verification where prescribed.
  9. Track processing/acceptance; an uploaded file is not automatically a successfully processed correction.
  10. Recheck deductee credit/defaults after processing and retain the acknowledgement and reconciliation.

Old-period correction rule

Do not convert a historical statement to a new-law form merely because the correction is filed after 1 April 2026. First identify the period and law governing the original TDS event, then use the correction route prescribed for that period. This prevents an old 24Q/26Q/27Q-period correction from being incorrectly treated as a TY 2026-27 Form 138/140/144 filing.

  2. Reconcile deduction liability and challans.
  3. Validate TAN, PAN, residential status and payment classification.
  4. Select the correct form and tax year/quarter.
  5. Prepare using the current utility.
  6. Clear validation errors before upload.
  7. Upload and complete verification as prescribed.
  8. Check final acceptance; upload alone is not proof of successful filing.
  9. Review processing/defaults and deductee credit.
  10. Archive acknowledgement, files, challans and reconciliation.

Common rejection and correction controls

  • Wrong tax year or quarter.
  • Regular file uploaded as correction or vice versa.
  • Utility/FVU version mismatch.
  • TAN mismatch.
  • Duplicate regular statement.
  • Incorrect original-statement/correction reference details.
  • Trying to repair an old-law period using a TY 2026-27 new-law form.
  • Changing data without reconciling the underlying challan, ledger and deductee records.

Form 141 is different

Specified resident challan-cum-statement transactions use the applicable Form 141 framework and should not be mixed with the normal quarterly Forms 138/140/144 process.
